iPhone 4 Antenna: Step forward in technology & design, step back in perception

in Apple (AAPL), hardware, iPhone

Wow, how about all the hullabaloo regarding the iPhone 4? If you’d like to get up to speed and get an objective report on the iPhone 4 read this article and detailed review of the issues.

“Criticism that isn’t constructive is rarely useful, and as we’ve just shown there are things that Apple can do to address the issue today. Using a bumper the iPhone 4 behaves no differently than the 3GS.” –  AnandTech, “The iPhone 4 Redux: Analyzing Apple’s iOS 4.0.1 Signal Fix & Antenna Issue”

There is plenty to read, hear and see in the media regarding the problems with the iPhone 4. There are also many jokes and satires. The fact that these relatively small technical but fixable problems caused such a stir should be quite encouraging to Apple fans. The products are so popular that they attracted the attention previously reserved for Microsoft bungles and mistakes.

Apple needs to be prepared for future criticism and publicity of this scale. Although I would not even consider using an iPhone without a rubber cover (my G3 has not been used without its cover since I bought it) it is difficult for me to say “jeez, why didn’t you just by the cover?”, because the covers were in short supply. They simply weren’t available.

The stats show that most folks are happy with their purchase. The lack of an increase in returns over when the G3S was launched is indicative of that.

I’m quite happy with my G3 but envy the owners of of the 4. Unfortunately the bad press has suppressed coverage of the technological leaps in features and functionality. I’m not a heavy cell phone user, so I am hardly the one to speak about cell phones. But the capabilities of this phone are unmatched in other smart phones.

We’re not going to get into a debate about specific features and how they stack up to other offerings here.
The aim of this post is to, again, attempt to put things into a reasonable perspective and provide a link to a great article with some great in-depth testing and research.
